Exuberant Organizing Pericarditis

These digitized slides show a thick pericardium. The white dotted lines delineate the fibrosa layer of the parietal pericardium the upper part shows abundant granulation tissue, fibrin deposition and trapped red blood cells consistent with an organizing inflammatory process undergoing repair. Note the infiltration of the fibrous tissue by mucopolysaccharide material (green). The mediastinal surface of the pericardium also shows granulation tissue and chronic inflammation.
